Neuropsychologist Arne Dietrich studies the neuroscience of creativity and consciousness. His research segments creativity into four types: deliberate and cognitive, deliberate and emotional, spontaneous and cognitive, and spontaneous and emotional. The artist is associated with spontaneous and emotional creativity while engineers posses deliberate and cognitive creativity.

Designers are trained to draw from all creative modes as is required of them. They use spontaneous and emotional creativity to develop a conceptual idea, spontaneous and cognitive creativity to translate that concept to 3D rendering, and deliberate and cognitive creativity to produce detailed construction drawings.
